Custom packaging for Etsy sellers: when a printed box pays, and what it costs per order

A printed box on Etsy is a cost you pay on every order, often with free shipping on top. Here's when custom packaging for Etsy pays, which size keeps postage down, and what it costs from 100 boxes.

Custom packaging for Etsy: a stock box with a sticker beside a printed mailer, with the cost per order for each

Custom packaging for Etsy pays for itself when your average order is big enough to carry a box that costs a dollar or two, and when the box itself is part of what people are buying, like a gift. If you sell $12 stickers in a padded envelope, a printed box will eat your margin, and nobody will thank you for it.

So the real question isn't "should my shop look fancier?" It's "what does a box cost me per order, and what do I get back?" This guide works that out with real numbers, from 100 boxes up.

Why packaging costs more on Etsy than you'd think

On Etsy, the box usually rides along with free shipping. Back in 2019 Etsy started offering sellers tools to "guarantee free shipping to US buyers who spend at least $35 in their shop," and said that "beginning on July 30, 2019, Etsy will give priority placement in US search results to items that ship free." Its own data, per the Etsy announcement (opens in a new tab), showed "buyers are significantly more likely to purchase an item in their cart with free shipping."

That changes the math. If shipping is free to the buyer, you're paying the label, the box, the tissue, and the tape out of the item price. A box that's an inch too big can push the label up as well, so packaging and postage have to be planned together.

Work out your packaging budget per order

Before you price a single box, do this with your own numbers.

  1. Take your average order value for the last three months from Shop Manager.
  2. Subtract Etsy's fees, your materials, and your time.
  3. Subtract the shipping label you actually pay, not the one the buyer sees.
  4. Look at what's left and decide how much of it you're happy to spend on the box.

If a $45 order leaves you $14, spending $1.70 on a printed mailer is about 12% of your profit on that order. If a $20 order leaves you $5, the same box is a third of it. That one comparison settles the question for most shops faster than any mood board.

Custom packaging for Etsy: what a printed box costs

These are unit prices from our price model, full color on white board with no finish unless the row says otherwise. Sizes are inside dimensions in inches.

The jump from 100 to 250 is the big one. At 100, you're paying a large share of the setup on every box; at 250, that share drops by more than a third. That's why our minimum is 100, but we'd point most Etsy shops to 250 if they ship a few orders a day. If you ship a handful a week, 100 is the honest answer, and the post on custom boxes with no minimum covers what to do below that.

You can type your own size into the price estimator and get the same kind of number in a few seconds.

The cheaper version that still looks branded

You don't need full color on every face to look like a real brand. A one-color logo on kraft mailer boxes reads as handmade and deliberate, which suits most Etsy shops anyway. On a 9 x 6 x 3 mailer, it's $1.71 at 250 against $2.21 for full color, a saving of 50 cents on every order.

The other low-cost route is a plain stock box with a printed sticker or a stamp. It's a good way to start, and there's nothing wrong with it. The point where it stops making sense is when you're spending real time sticking and stamping every evening, or when your product is a gift, and the outside of the box is the first thing the recipient sees.

Size the box for the postage, not just the product

On a free shipping order, the label is often a higher cost than the box, so size matters twice.

  • Measure the product, then add room for padding. A quarter inch per side is enough for something firm, more for anything that can break. The guide on how to measure a box shows which side is which.
  • Watch the cubic tiers. USPS Ground Advantage Cubic prices by volume in small steps, and a box can land in a dearer tier by a fraction of an inch. Our post on shipping box sizes shows how a 9 x 6 x 3 box rates against one just under it.
  • Don't ship air. Big, light boxes get billed on dimensional weight with UPS and FedEx, so a roomy box can cost more to post than the item inside weighs.

If you're torn between sizes, the custom mailer box sizes guide prices six common ones and says what fits in each.

Sizing tip: before ordering 250 boxes, ask for a sample and pack a real order in it. Put it on a kitchen scale, measure the outside, and buy the label on Etsy before you commit. Ten minutes of that beats a run of boxes that push every label into the next price step.

What to print, and where

An Etsy buyer usually opens the box at home, often as a gift, so the inside of the lid is where you get their attention. Printing inside raises a 9 x 6 x 3 mailer from $2.21 to $2.61 at 250. Worth it for a gift shop. Probably not for a shop selling replacement parts.

A few things that work well on a small run:

  • Your logo and shop name on the lid, big enough to read in a photo.
  • A short thank you inside the lid instead of a separate printed card.
  • Your Etsy shop URL or an Instagram handle, so a gift recipient can find you.
  • Nothing seasonal on the outside, so a box ordered for December still works in March.

Keep the shipping label in mind. It needs a clear, flat space on one face, so don't fill every inch of the lid with artwork. The post on custom mailer box design goes panel by panel.

Put the box in your listing photos

Once you've paid for a printed box, let it work before the sale as well as after. Etsy buyers only see your photos, so a shot of the product sitting in the open box, lid up and tissue folded back, tells a gift buyer it arrives ready to hand over. Use it as one of the later photos in the listing, not the first, because the first one still needs to show the product clearly.

It also answers a question buyers often message about: will this come gift-wrapped? A photo of the packed box answers that before anybody has to ask.

A worked example: a candle shop at the holidays

Say you sell hand-poured candles in 8 oz tins, mostly as gifts, with an average order of about $42 and Etsy's free shipping guarantee turned on.

  1. Two tins plus padding fit a 6 x 4 x 2 mailer only if they lie flat, so you go to 9 x 6 x 3 to fit a gift pair with a card.
  2. You choose one color on kraft, because the candles carry the color and the box looks handmade. That's $1.71 a box at 250.
  3. You add a custom insert so the tins don't rattle, since a dented tin is a refund.
  4. You order 250, which covers roughly the busy weeks from Black Friday to mid-December at a few orders a day.

Your box cost is now a known number per order, and you can build it into the item price instead of hoping it works out. The custom candle boxes guide has more on glass versus tins.

Holiday timing for Etsy shops

Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026, and Small Business Saturday on November 28. If you want branded boxes for that weekend, order with time to spare: artwork and a proof first, then 3 to 5 days on press, then transit to you.

USPS has said the recommended last day to send by Ground Advantage for delivery by Christmas in the lower 48 is December 17, 2026, with Priority Mail on December 18. Your buyers' cutoff on Etsy should sit a few days before that, and your boxes need to be on your shelf well before both.

When custom packaging isn't worth it

Be honest with yourself here. It's usually not worth it when:

  • Your average order is under about $20 and the item ships flat in an envelope.
  • You change products every few weeks, so no single box size fits most orders.
  • You ship fewer than 100 orders in the time it takes to use a box run, so the boxes sit in a closet getting dusty.

In those cases, a stock box and a good sticker is the smarter buy, and you can come back to printed boxes once the shop grows. A free sample pack costs only the shipping and lets you feel the board before you decide.

Key takeaways

  • Custom packaging for Etsy is a per-order cost, usually paid on top of free shipping, so budget it against your profit per order.
  • A full-color 9 x 6 x 3 mailer is $3.50 at 100 and $2.21 at 250; one color on kraft is $1.71 at 250.
  • Size the box for postage as well as the product, because the label often costs more than the box.
  • Print inside the lid if your orders are gifts; skip it if they aren't.
  • Below about $20 an order, a stock box with a sticker usually wins.

Common questions

Is custom packaging worth it for a small Etsy shop?

It's worth it when your orders are big enough to carry a box cost of one to two dollars and your product is often a gift. Work out your profit per order first. If the box would take more than about a sixth of it, start with a stock box and a sticker.

How much does custom packaging for Etsy cost?

A full-color 6 x 4 x 2 mailer is $2.68 a box at 100 and $1.70 at 250. A 9 x 6 x 3 mailer is $3.50 at 100 and $2.21 at 250, or $1.71 at 250 with a one-color logo on kraft.

What's the smallest order of custom boxes I can get?

Our minimum is 100 boxes on every format. Below that, the setup cost spread across so few boxes makes each one expensive, and a stock box is usually the better buy.

Can I ship a box with logos on it through USPS?

Yes. A printed box ships like any other box, as long as the shipping label sits flat on one face and isn't wrapped over an edge. Just don't reuse USPS Priority Mail boxes for other services.

Which box is best for shipping Etsy orders?

For most small items, a printed corrugated mailer, because it closes without tape and opens well. Heavier or bulkier orders are better in a shipping box, and our mailer boxes page compares sizes and prices.
