If you want the short answer

Which one would we pick?

Most people arrive knowing what they sell and not what the box is called. Here is what we would actually order, and where the money usually gets wasted.

You ship it yourself

Start with a mailer

A corrugated mailer ships on its own, survives a courier and is the box people photograph. At 250 it lands around $2 a box. If you are choosing your first format and you sell online, it is this one about four times out of five.

Custom mailer boxes

It sits on a shelf

Folding carton, every time

Paperboard cartons are the cheapest way to look like a retail product, from about 45 cents. They ship flat, they hold fine detail, and a window costs very little on top if the product is the pretty part.

Custom folding cartons

Somebody is giving it away

Rigid, and only then

A rigid box feels like a gift and costs like one, from about $3.50. It earns its money on a $100 product and wastes it on a $15 one. If the budget is tight, a printed mailer with a nice insert beats a cheap rigid box every time.

Custom rigid boxes

All twelve, side by side

Prices are per box at volume, so a run of a hundred lands higher. Lead time is time on press after you approve the proof, with 1 to 7 days of transit on top of it.

Straight answers

Before you add anything

The questions people ask us on the way to a first order, answered without the sales part.

Can I get a price for more than one box type at once?

Yes, and it works out better that way. Add each format to your quote list, set the quantity on each, and send the lot in one go. We price them together, which usually saves on artwork setup and sometimes on freight if they ship at the same time.

How accurate are the prices on this page?

The 'from' price on each card is what that format lands at on a decent sized run, usually 1,000 or more. A run of 100 or 250 costs noticeably more per box, because the setup is the same whether we print a hundred or five thousand. The buy box on each product page will get you within range for your own size and quantity.

Do you sell plain, unprinted boxes?

We can quote them, but honestly you will do better at a stock box supplier for plain brown boxes. Our pricing assumes printing, and buying an unprinted custom box from us means paying for a setup you are not using. Where we are worth it is the moment your brand goes on the box.

What is the cheapest box you make?

Pillow boxes at about 35 cents and folding cartons at about 45 cents, both at volume. Cheapest per box is not always cheapest per order though. A small format at 500 units can cost less in total than a large one at 100, so tell us the budget and we will say which format fits it.

Can I mix two sizes in one order?

You can, and it is worth knowing what it costs. Each size is its own die and its own setup, so two sizes is closer to two orders than one. If both sizes are going ahead anyway, running them together still saves on artwork and shipping. If one is a maybe, order the certain one first.

How long until they arrive?

Flat formats like mailers and cartons run 10 to 14 days on press, and anything wrapped or assembled by hand runs 12 to 15. That clock starts when you approve the proof, not when you send the enquiry, and there is 1 to 7 days of transit on top. If you have a launch date, tell us the date and we will say honestly whether it works.

I have no idea which format to pick. Where do I start?

One question sorts most first orders: does the box go in the post on its own, or does it go inside something else? On its own means a mailer. Inside something else means a folding carton. Everything after that is a preference rather than a mistake, and we will tell you if you have picked the expensive way round.

What is the difference between a mailer and a shipping box?

A mailer is printed on the outside and is meant to be the parcel. A shipping box is a plain outer whose job is to protect what is inside it. If your customer sees it on their doorstep, buy the mailer. If it is going to a warehouse to be opened by staff, buy the plain one and put the money somewhere they will notice.

Can I order fewer than a hundred?

No, and we would rather publish that than bury it. Below a hundred the setup swallows the order and a box that ought to cost two dollars costs eight. At that size a stock box with a well printed sticker is genuinely the better buy, and it is what we will tell you to do.

Do the prices on these cards include shipping?

No, and nobody in packaging quotes it that way. Freight depends on where the pallet goes and how much air is inside the boxes, so it is priced as its own line where you can see it rather than folded into a unit price where you cannot.

Put a few on the list and we’ll price them.

Add whichever formats you are weighing up, tell us roughly how many, and we come back with a real price and a free design mockup. No card, no obligation.
