How to use it

From a number to a folded box

  1. 1Measure your product at its widest point, then add about a quarter inch of clearance. Those are your inside dimensions.
  2. 2Pick a style, punch the numbers in, and download the SVG.
  3. 3Print at 100 percent scale, cut the solid lines, score the dashed ones, and fold it up. Now put your product in it.
  4. 4Happy with the fit? Open the SVG in Illustrator or Affinity, put your artwork on a layer underneath, and keep the dieline layer where it is.

Before you design on it

These templates are geometrically correct for design and for a paper mockup. For a live production run we still draw a final dieline against the exact board and the exact machine, because flute direction and glue tab shape vary by factory. That one is free too, it just isn’t something a generator can guess.

Are these dielines really free?

Yes, and there’s no email wall. Set your size, download the SVG, use it wherever you like, including with another printer. We’d rather be useful than collect your address.

What do the lines mean?

Solid black lines are cuts, where the blade goes through the board. Dashed blue lines are creases, where the board is pressed so it folds cleanly. Every factory uses this convention.

Do I need to add bleed?

Yes. Extend any artwork that touches an edge about an eighth of an inch past the cut line, and keep important text an eighth of an inch inside it. Give yourself a quarter inch of clearance from any crease so folding doesn’t crack your artwork.

Should I use inside or outside measurements?

Inside, always. Board has real thickness, so a box measured from the outside won’t fit the product you measured. Our guide on measuring a box covers this properly.

Can I get a dieline for a box style that isn’t here?

Of course. Mailer boxes, rigid boxes, sleeves, pillow boxes and display units all have their own layouts, and we’ll draw one for your exact size. Ask us and it costs nothing.

What do I open the SVG in?

Illustrator, Affinity Designer, CorelDRAW or Inkscape all open it directly, and Inkscape is free. If all you have is Canva or Photoshop, send us the dimensions instead and we’ll send back a file you can drop artwork into. Don’t trace a dieline by hand in a raster tool: the lines have to stay vector to be cut from.

Can I print it at home and check the fit?

That’s the best thing you can do with it. Print at 100 percent with page scaling turned off, cut it out, fold on the dashed lines and put the actual product inside. Paper behaves differently from board, so it won’t feel like the real box, but it answers the only question that matters right now: does it fit.

Which way round do the three dimensions go?

Length, then width, then depth, and always measured inside the box. Length is the longer side of the opening, width is the shorter side, depth is how far down it goes. Almost every sizing mistake we’re asked to fix is those three numbers written in a different order.

What is a die, and am I paying for one?

A die is the shaped steel blade that cuts your box out of a flat sheet. It’s a real physical object made for your size, which is why a new size costs more the first time than the second. It’s kept and reused, so a reorder at the same size doesn’t pay for it again.

How precise does my measurement need to be?

To about a sixteenth of an inch. That sounds fussy until you meet a product that rattles. Measure the product at its widest point in all three directions, then add roughly a quarter inch each way for clearance and any padding, and use those numbers as the inside of the box.
