Custom candle boxes: which box survives the courier, and what it costs
October 6, 20268 min readWritten by the BoxCrisp team

Custom candle boxes have one job before they look good: get a heavy glass jar to someone's door without a crack or a scuffed label. For a candle in glass, that means a box with a cut-to-fit insert, and the outer box is a style choice on top of that. A medium printed mailer runs about $2.21 a box at 250 from us, a rigid gift box about $5.06, and the insert adds about $1.08.
That's the short version. The rest of this guide covers which box style suits which kind of candle brand, why the insert matters more than the finish, what each option actually costs, and when to order if you're selling into the holidays.
Why candles are hard to box
A candle is a strange product to package. It's heavy for its size, it's usually glass, and it's very often a gift, so the box gets judged twice: once by the courier and once by the person unwrapping it.
Three things can go wrong.
- The jar moves. Glass that can slide around inside a box hits the walls on every drop and every conveyor transfer. Either it breaks or the label rubs until it looks secondhand.
- The box is too weak for the weight. A filled glass jar with its lid weighs a lot more than, say, a lipstick or a serum bottle, and a thin carton that bows under that weight loses its corners in transit.
- The heat. Wax softens in heat, and soy wax softens sooner than paraffin. A box can't keep a truck cool, but it can stop a softened candle from being knocked out of shape.
None of that is fixed by a nicer finish. It's fixed by structure.
Which custom candle box should you pick?
There are four formats that make sense for candles, and they suit different businesses.
Rigid box for a gift candle
A rigid box for candles is the thick greyboard box with a separate lid that people keep afterwards. If your candle sells above about $30, or you sell mainly as gifts, this is the one we'd pick. It doubles as gift wrap, the thick board protects the jar well, and it's the box people tend to photograph. If you want the full detail on how they're built, our guide to custom rigid boxes covers it.
The catch is cost and freight. Rigid boxes arrive already built, so they take real storage space, and they're the highest unit price we sell.
Mailer box for a direct-to-consumer candle
A printed mailer box for candles is the corrugated box with a tuck front that ships on its own, with no outer carton. If you sell mostly online and the candle is under about $30, this is usually the better buy. Corrugated board handles knocks better than thin paperboard, and one box does both jobs, so you're not paying for a gift box and a shipping box.
Window box for retail shelves
A window box for candles has a cut out with clear film so a shopper can see the color of the wax. It's a shelf format. It's great in a gift shop and the wrong choice on its own for e-commerce, because a window is a weak point in a parcel.
Plain shipping box around a printed box
If you sell rigid boxes or window boxes online, they still need an outer shipping box. A printed rigid box on its own in a courier network comes out with dented corners. A plain or one-color carton around it, with a little padding, is what keeps the inner box looking new.
The insert matters more than the box
If you only spend money on one thing, spend it on the insert.
A box insert is a die-cut board piece that holds the jar in place, so it can't slide around when the parcel is dropped or tipped. Without one, every drop in transit is a chance for glass to hit cardboard, and a broken candle costs you a replacement, a second shipment, and an unhappy customer.
A few things we'd say about inserts for candles specifically:
- Cut it to the jar, not the box. The insert should grip the glass, with the lid on, and leave a finger gap so the jar comes out easily.
- Hold it at the top and the bottom. A collar near the top stops the jar from tipping, which a base cutout alone won't do.
- Use one insert design for a set. If you sell a three-candle gift set, one insert with three cutouts holds the set steadier than three loose pieces, and it's one part to order instead of three.
Our custom box inserts guide goes through the styles in detail, including which ones work for heavy glass.
What custom candle boxes cost
Here's what a medium box, printed full color outside with no finish, costs per box from us. These come straight from the same price model our estimator uses, before shipping and tax.
| Box | 100 | 250 | 500 | 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mailer box | $3.50 | $2.21 | $1.57 | $1.40 |
| Rigid box | $8.00 | $5.06 | $3.58 | $3.50 |
| Window box | $1.80 | $1.14 | $0.95 | $0.95 |
| Shipping box | $2.40 | $1.52 | $1.07 | $1.00 |
| Box insert | $1.70 | $1.08 | $0.80 | $0.80 |
Two things stand out.
First, the jump from 100 to 250 is the big one. Setup cost gets spread over more boxes, so a mailer drops from $3.50 to $2.21. Past 500, the price flattens, because board, ink, and freight don't get cheaper with volume.
Second, a full online setup isn't one line on that table. A rigid gift box shipped online is the rigid box, the insert, and an outer shipping box: about $7.66 a set at 250. A mailer with an insert is about $3.29. That's the real choice for a candle brand selling online.
Our honest pick for a new candle brand selling online: a printed mailer with a cut-to-fit insert, 250 to start. Move to rigid boxes when you have a gift line that sells above about $30.
How to order custom candle boxes
Getting the box right mostly comes down to doing things in the right order.
- Finish the jar first. Measure the actual jar with its lid on, not the supplier's spec sheet. Our guide on how to measure a box shows which measurement is length, width, and depth.
- Decide how it ships. Online only, retail only, or both. That decides mailer, window box, or rigid plus outer carton.
- Size the insert to the jar, then the box to the insert. Working the other way round is how you end up with a box that fits the insert and an insert that doesn't fit the jar.
- Check the strength. For heavier sets in a shipping carton, it's worth knowing what an ECT rating means; our ECT 32 vs 44 guide explains which one a heavy parcel needs.
- Get a sample in your hands. A sample pack lets you feel the board and finishes before you commit to a run.
- Approve the proof, then order. Nothing goes to press until you've approved a proof.
When to order for the holidays
According to the National Candle Association (opens in a new tab), about 35% of candle sales happen in the Christmas and holiday season. That makes October the month to get boxes sorted, not December.
Work backwards from the day you need boxes in hand. Allow time for artwork and proof rounds first, then about five working days on press once the proof is approved, then transit. If your label or artwork is still changing in November, there may not be time left for proofs, printing, and transit before the rush.
One more tip for the season: order your holiday sleeve or sticker separately from the main box. A plain branded box that runs all year, dressed up with a seasonal sleeve, means you aren't stuck with 400 Christmas boxes in January.
Shipping candles in hot weather
A box can't cool a delivery truck, so some of this is about how you ship, not what you ship in.
- Ship early in the week so a parcel doesn't sit in a depot over a weekend.
- Use a faster service for hot destinations in midsummer.
- Keep the jar snug. A candle that has softened but can't move keeps its shape far better than one rattling in an oversized box.
- Don't oversize the box. A bigger box adds space for the jar to move and can push up the price, which our dimensional weight guide explains.
Key takeaways
- Custom candle boxes need structure first: a cut-to-fit insert matters more than the finish.
- Online brands under about $30 a candle usually do best with a printed mailer plus an insert.
- Gift candles suit a rigid box, which needs an outer shipping box to travel well.
- A medium mailer runs about $2.21 a box at 250, a rigid box about $5.06, an insert about $1.08.
- About 35% of US candle sales fall in the holiday season, so order boxes in October.
Common questions
What is the best box for shipping candles?
For an online candle brand, a corrugated mailer box with a die-cut insert holding the jar. It ships on its own and survives the courier better than a paperboard box.
How much do custom candle boxes cost?
From us, a medium full color mailer is about $3.50 each at 100 and $2.21 at 250. A rigid gift box is about $8.00 at 100 and $5.06 at 250. An insert adds about $1.08 at 250.
What is the minimum order for custom candle boxes?
Our minimum is 100 boxes for every format. The unit price drops the most between 100 and 250.
Do I need an insert for a candle box?
If the candle is in glass, yes. A jar that can move inside the box can break or scuff its label on the way.
Can I ship a rigid candle box on its own?
It's not a good idea. Put it inside a plain shipping box with a little padding so the printed wrap and corners arrive undamaged.
