Custom pillow boxes: what actually fits inside, which size to pick, and what they cost

A pillow box has a length and a width but no depth, so sizing one works differently from any other box. Here's what fits in each size, what custom pillow boxes cost from 100, and when a carton is the better buy.

Custom pillow boxes in two sizes, a gift card sliding into the small one and a soap bar into the medium one, with the price at 250

Custom pillow boxes are small printed boxes that curve into a soft pillow shape when you fold them, and they're sized by length and width only, because there's no flat depth to measure. Our small pillow box is about 4 x 3 inches and runs $0.66 each at 250 in full color, which makes it the cheapest printed box we sell for a gift card, a pair of earrings, or a hair tie.

That missing depth is the whole trick to buying one. A pillow box is fat in the middle and flat at both ends, so the question isn't "what are the dimensions of my product" the way it is for a mailer. It's "how thick is my product at its thickest point, and can it sit in the middle of the curve". Get that right, and a pillow box is a lovely little thing. Get it wrong, and the ends won't close.

What a pillow box is, and why it has no depth

A pillow box starts as one flat printed sheet with two curved creases near each end. When you bend the sheet into a tube and push those curved ends in, they fold down and lock. No glue, no tape, no assembly beyond a squeeze.

Because the ends are curves rather than square flaps, the box has no fixed depth. It's deepest in the center and comes to a thin edge at each end, like a pillow or a fortune cookie. That's why our custom pillow boxes page lists two numbers per size and not three.

It also explains why they're cheap. A flat sheet with a couple of creases uses less board than a carton with six walls and a tuck flap, ships to you flat, and takes up almost no space on a shelf until the moment you fold one.

What fits in each pillow box size

We make custom pillow boxes in two sizes. Here's what each one is built around.

SizeFlat sizeWhat fits wellWhat doesn't
SmallAbout 4 x 3 inA gift card, earrings, a ring, hair ties, a lip balmAnything stiff and thicker than a finger
MediumAbout 6 x 4 in, up to 9 x 5 inA soap bar, a small candle tin, a folded scarf or teeA glass jar, a boxed product, anything with corners

The gift card is the easy one to plan around, because its size is fixed by a standard. Credit cards, gift cards and most ID cards use the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 format (opens in a new tab), which is 85.60 x 53.98 mm, or 3 3/8 x 2 1/8 inches. That leaves room on every side inside a 4 x 3 pillow box, enough for a card in a thin paper sleeve too.

The medium size covers a wider range, up to about 9 x 5 inches, and that's where measuring matters. A scarf or a folded tee squashes to fit the curve. A soap bar doesn't, so check its thickness before you order.

How to check if your product is too thick

You can't type a depth into the estimator for a pillow box, so do a quick test at home instead. It takes five minutes and saves you from a run of boxes that won't close.

  1. Measure your product's length, width, and thickness at the thickest point. Our guide on how to measure a box shows where to put the ruler.
  2. Cut a strip of printer paper the length and width of the pillow box size you're thinking about.
  3. Roll it loosely into a tube and pinch both ends flat, the way the box closes.
  4. Slide your product into the middle. If it sits in the fat part with the ends still pinched shut, you're fine.
  5. If the ends pop open or the paper tears, go up a size, or pick a carton instead.

A pillow box holds flat and soft things best. If your product is stiff, square, and thicker than your thumb, a small carton will close properly and protect it better.

On the proof, we'll check the fit against the measurements you send. But a paper test in your own kitchen tells you most of what you need before you spend anything.

What custom pillow boxes cost

These are real prices from our estimator, 2026 pricing, white board with no finish unless noted.

Size and print100 boxes250 boxes500 boxes1,000 boxes
Small, one color$0.85$0.54$0.39$0.39
Small, full color$1.04$0.66$0.48$0.48
Small, one color on kraft$0.80$0.51$0.37$0.37
Medium, one color$1.07$0.67$0.49$0.49
Medium, full color$1.30$0.82$0.60$0.60
Medium, full color, matte$1.40$0.89$0.65$0.65
Medium, full color, foil logo$1.76$1.11$0.81$0.81

For comparison, a small folding carton in full color is $1.76 at 100 and $1.11 at 250. So a small pillow box costs about 40 percent less than a carton for the same job, as long as the product suits the shape.

Look at the last two columns. The price is the same at 500 as it is at 1,000. Past 500, you're paying for board and ink, and those don't get cheaper with volume, so a bigger run just means more boxes in a closet. If you're starting, our post on custom boxes with no minimum talks through how small a first run can sensibly be.

Kraft, white, foil or a window

Pillow boxes take the same board and finish choices as most of what we print, so the decision is about the look you want.

  • Kraft board. Brown, natural, and a few cents cheaper. It suits soap, candles, and handmade jewelry. Dark logos print well on it, and pastels fade, which our post on custom kraft boxes explains in detail.
  • White board. The bright choice for full-color art and soft brand colors.
  • Matte laminate. Adds about 7 cents a box at 250 on the medium size and keeps fingerprints off. Worth it if the boxes sit on a counter and get handled.
  • Foil stamp. Makes the logo shine and adds about 29 cents a box at 250 on the medium size. Nice for jewelry and holiday gifting, overkill for hair ties.
  • A window. A clear panel so the product shows through. Our post on custom window boxes covers where to cut one and which film to ask for.

If you're torn between finishes, the packaging finishes guide compares all five on the same box.

Worked example: an Etsy jewelry shop at a holiday craft fair

Say you sell handmade earrings on Etsy and you've booked a table at a holiday craft fair in early December. Each pair sits on a 2 x 3 inch backing card, about a quarter inch thick with the hooks.

  1. The card is under 3 x 2 inches, so the small pillow box fits it with room to spare. No paper test needed for something this flat.
  2. Your logo is a gold line drawing, so you pick white board with a foil stamp to make it shine under the fair lights.
  3. You expect to sell about 150 pairs between the fair and December orders, so you order 250. That leaves stock for Valentine's Day.
  4. At 250, a small full color box with foil is about 89 cents. That's roughly $223 for the run, on a pair of earrings selling for $28.

The same box works for online orders too. Drop the pillow box inside a padded mailer, and it arrives looking like a gift. Our guide to custom packaging for Etsy sellers works out how a box like this fits into your shipping costs.

There's a ready-made version of this on our pillow boxes for jewelry page, and soap makers can start from pillow boxes for soap.

When a pillow box is the wrong choice

A pillow box is a presentation box, not a protective one. Skip it when:

  • The product is fragile. Glass, ceramic, and anything that chips needs walls and an insert.
  • It ships on its own. A pillow box can't take a shipping label and a trip through a sorting center by itself. Put it inside a mailer.
  • It's square and stiff. A boxed product or a jar won't sit in a curve. A carton will.
  • You need it to stack on a shelf. Pillow boxes roll and slide. They look great in a bowl or a basket by the register, less great in a neat stack.

If you're packing a gift with several pieces, our post on gift box sizes covers boxes with real corners and lids.

Holiday timing for pillow boxes

Pillow boxes peak in the holiday season, for gift cards, stocking stuffers, and craft fair sales. Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026, and Small Business Saturday on November 28. Work backward from the day you need the boxes in hand: artwork and a proof first, then 3 to 5 days on press, then transit to you. Sending your artwork in early November is comfortable. Waiting until the week of Thanksgiving is cutting it close.

Want to feel the board before you commit? A sample pack shows real printed board and finishes. It costs $9.95 in shipping, credited back on your first order.

Key takeaways

  • Custom pillow boxes are sized by length and width only, because the curved ends give them no flat depth.
  • The small size, about 4 x 3 inches, fits a standard 3 3/8 x 2 1/8 inch gift card with room to spare.
  • Test a thick product with a rolled strip of paper before you order.
  • A small full color pillow box is $0.66 at 250, about 40 percent less than a small carton.
  • Prices stop falling at 500, and a pillow box needs a mailer around it to ship.

Common questions

What are pillow boxes used for?

Small, light, and giftable things: gift cards, jewelry, hair ties, soap bars, lip balm, and folded scarves. They're a presentation box for a counter, a craft fair table, or the inside of a mailer, not a box that protects anything fragile.

What sizes do custom pillow boxes come in?

We make two sizes: small, about 4 x 3 inches, and medium, about 6 x 4 inches and up to 9 x 5 inches. There's no depth number, because the curved ends make the box thickest in the middle and flat at both ends.

How much do custom pillow boxes cost?

A small pillow box in full color is $1.04 each at 100 and $0.66 at 250. A medium one is $1.30 at 100 and $0.82 at 250. One color and kraft board are a little cheaper, and foil adds about 29 cents at 250 on the medium size.

Can a pillow box hold a gift card?

Yes. A gift card is 3 3/8 x 2 1/8 inches, the standard ID-1 card size, and it fits inside our small 4 x 3 inch pillow box with room for a thin paper sleeve.

Can you ship a pillow box by itself?

We wouldn't. A pillow box has no flat side for a label and no walls to protect what's inside, so it should travel inside a padded mailer or a shipping box. It's built to look good when it's opened, not to survive a sorting center.
