Custom kraft boxes: what prints well on brown board, what it costs, and when to pick white instead

Kraft is brown board with nothing hiding the fiber, and that changes how your logo prints, which finishes work and what you pay. Here's what custom kraft boxes cost from 100 and how to design for them.

Custom kraft boxes: the same logo printed on white board and on brown kraft board, showing how ink darkens on kraft, with the price at 250

Custom kraft boxes are printed boxes made from brown, unbleached paperboard, and the brown stays visible under every ink you put on it. An 8 x 6 x 3 custom kraft box with your logo in one color runs about $0.89 each at 250, which is roughly a third less than the same box in full color on white board.

That one fact, the brown staying put, decides almost everything else. It's why kraft is cheaper, why a black logo looks great on it, why a pale pink logo turns muddy, and why you can't put a gloss laminate on it here. Get that in your head before you design, and you'll be happy with the boxes when they arrive.

What kraft board actually is

"Kraft" comes from the German word for strength, and it names a way of turning wood chips into pulp. The chips are cooked in chemicals that dissolve most of what glues the fibers together, which leaves long, strong fibers behind. The AIC conservation dictionary (opens in a new tab) notes that "kraft" and "sulfate" are now used almost interchangeably, that these pulps were first used for paper and board where strength mattered most, and that softwoods give the strongest grades.

White board starts the same way and then gets bleached and coated so it takes ink like a sheet of printer paper. Kraft skips both steps. That's where the savings come from, and it's also where the look comes from: you can see the fiber, the color shifts a little from batch to batch, and the surface drinks ink rather than holding it on top.

Our custom kraft boxes come as mailers, tuck top boxes, and folding cartons, all in that natural brown.

How ink looks on brown board

Think of printing on kraft like drawing with a marker on a paper grocery bag. Dark colors look rich. Light colors almost vanish.

There's no white layer underneath, so every ink mixes with the brown. Here's roughly what to expect:

Ink colorOn white boardOn kraft board
BlackCrisp blackCrisp black, the safest pick
Navy or forest greenTrue to the swatchSlightly deeper, still clean
Bright redBright redBrick red
YellowBright yellowMustard, low contrast
Pastel pink or light blueSoft and cleanMuddy, often hard to read
WhiteThe board itselfNot possible, there's no white ink step

So if your logo is black, dark blue, dark green or deep red, kraft is a great fit. If your brand lives on pastels, white board is the better buy, even though it costs more. That's not us talking you out of the cheaper box.

Before you order, print your logo on a brown paper bag at home. It's a rough test, but if you can't read it on the bag, you won't love it on the box.

Our post on CMYK vs Pantone goes deeper on why a brand color shifts, and on kraft that shift is bigger than on any other board we sell.

One color or full color on kraft

Kraft boxes here take two print options: one color, or full color on every outside face. There's no inside print on this format.

One color is where kraft shines. A single dark ink on brown looks deliberate and handmade, the way a coffee roaster or a soap maker wants their shelf to look. It's also the cheaper of the two print options.

Full color on kraft works best for bold illustrations with dark outlines. Photos are the weak spot. A product photo printed on brown looks dim and a little sepia, because the brown shows through the lighter parts of the picture. If your design needs a photo, go white.

Which finishes kraft takes, and which it doesn't

You can order kraft with no finish at all, or with a matte laminate. That's it. We don't offer gloss, soft touch, or foil on this format.

The reason is simple. Someone picks kraft because it looks and feels like natural paper. A gloss laminate puts a shiny plastic skin over the top and hides exactly the texture they paid for. Soft touch does the same with a velvet feel that doesn't match. A matte laminate is the one exception worth having: it keeps the paper look while protecting the print from scuffs and greasy fingers, which helps with food and candles.

Our packaging finishes guide compares all five finishes side by side if you're still choosing a format.

What custom kraft boxes cost

These are real prices from our estimator for the three sizes on our kraft size chart, 2026 pricing, with no finish unless noted.

SizePrint100 boxes250 boxes500 boxes1,000 boxes
4 x 4 x 2 inOne color$1.05$0.66$0.58$0.58
4 x 4 x 2 inFull color$1.28$0.81$0.71$0.71
8 x 6 x 3 inOne color$1.41$0.89$0.78$0.78
8 x 6 x 3 inFull color$1.72$1.09$0.95$0.95
8 x 6 x 3 inFull color, matte$1.86$1.17$1.03$1.03

12 x 9 x 4 inFull color$2.49$1.58$1.38$1.38

For comparison, a white folding carton at 8 x 6 x 3 in full color is $2.12 at 100 and $1.34 at 250. So kraft saves you about 20 percent in full color and about a third in one color.

Notice the price stops falling at 500. Past that point, you're mostly paying for board and ink, and those don't get cheaper with volume. Ordering 1,000 to "save money" just leaves you with a garage full of boxes. Our post on wholesale custom boxes explains where bulk pricing flattens on every format.

Worked example: a soap maker's first run

Say you make cold process soap and sell at a Saturday farmers market plus a small online shop. Each bar is about 3.5 x 2.5 x 1.25 inches.

  1. Add a little room for the bar to slide in and out. A 4 x 4 x 2 box fits with space for a folded ingredients card, so that's your size.
  2. Your logo is a dark green leaf. That prints beautifully on kraft, so you choose one color.
  3. You sell about 60 bars a month, so 250 boxes cover roughly four months. At 250, that's $0.66 a box, or $165 for the run.
  4. You skip the matte laminate. Soap doesn't leave grease marks the way a candle can, and the bare paper feel suits a handmade product.

About 66 cents a bar, in a box that looks like it belongs on a craft fair table. Our kraft soap boxes page shows the same setup, and coffee roasters can look at kraft coffee boxes for bags and pods.

Is kraft actually the greener choice?

Often, but be careful what you print on the box. Plain kraft with no laminate is a single material, plain paper, and skipping the bleaching step is a real difference. Add a plastic laminate and the story gets weaker, because the box is no longer plain paper.

What you shouldn't do is print "100% compostable" or "eco-friendly" without proof. Those claims need backing, and the FTC takes them seriously. Our guide to eco-friendly packaging materials covers which claims are safe to make and which aren't.

Designing artwork for a kraft box

A few habits make kraft artwork look sharp instead of faded:

  • Go one step darker. Pick the darker version of your brand color for the box. It'll print closer to what you see on screen.
  • Keep thin lines thicker. Kraft fiber soaks up ink a little, so hairline type and tiny details can blur. Keep small text at 7 point or above and give fine lines some weight.
  • Let the brown be your background. Leave big areas of board bare. Kraft looks best when the ink is the accent, not a solid flood across every face.
  • Check the proof on paper, not just on screen. A screen can't show you brown board. Ask for a proof and look at it next to a brown bag.

Our free design help covers all of this, and the dieline guide explains where your art can safely sit on each panel.

When kraft is the wrong pick

Kraft isn't right for every brand, and it's fine to say so.

  • Your colors are pale. Pastels, soft gold, and light gray all fade into the brown.
  • Your design is a photo. Photos print dim and brownish on kraft.
  • You want a luxury unboxing. A custom rigid box with a wrapped finish will feel more premium than any kraft carton.
  • You need it shiny. No gloss on this format, so white board with a gloss laminate is the way.

If two of those apply to you, white board will make you happier, even at the higher price.

Holiday timing for kraft boxes

Kraft has a natural home in the holiday season, from farmers markets to holiday craft fairs to gift sets. Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026, and Small Business Saturday on November 28. Work backward from the day you need boxes in hand: artwork and a proof first, then 3 to 5 days on press, then transit to you. Starting in early November is comfortable. Starting the week of Thanksgiving is a gamble.

Key takeaways

  • Custom kraft boxes are unbleached brown board, and the brown shows through every ink.
  • Dark logos print beautifully on kraft; pastels, photos and white do not.
  • Kraft here takes one color or full color, with no finish or a matte laminate only.
  • An 8 x 6 x 3 kraft box is $0.89 at 250 in one color, against $1.34 for a white full color carton.
  • Prices stop falling at 500, so order for the next few months, not the next few years.

Common questions

What are kraft boxes?

Kraft boxes are made from kraft paperboard, a brown board that hasn't been bleached or coated. It's strong for its weight and shows the natural paper fiber, which is the look most people mean when they say "kraft".

How much do custom kraft boxes cost?

A 4 x 4 x 2 kraft box with a one color logo is $1.05 each at 100 and $0.66 at 250. An 8 x 6 x 3 box is $1.41 at 100 and $0.89 at 250 in one color, or $1.09 at 250 in full color.

Can you print white ink on kraft boxes?

Not on our kraft boxes. There's no white ink step, so anything white in your logo shows as the brown board. If your logo needs white, choose white board instead.

What's the minimum order for kraft boxes?

Our minimum is 100 boxes, on every size. Every run includes free design help and a proof before anything prints.

Can kraft boxes have a glossy finish?

No. We offer kraft with no finish or with a matte laminate. Gloss and soft-touch cover the paper texture that people choose kraft for, so we don't offer them on this format.
